WOXY Dies, Surfer Blood Lives

The WOXY plane went crashing into the mountain a mere two days after hosting some amazing Lounge Act sessions during SXSW 2010. I know this because I was there. You most likely were not there, but hopefully you were one of the thousands listening online. Otherwise, you missed out. With WOXY up in flames, all of the recordings and videos from that week are stuck in digital limbo, with no sign of escape to the public by being added to the grand Lounge Acts Archive or recapped on the Futurist. All of them are trapped, all of them except one…

The boys of Surfer Blood are young, kind, and creative. They are one of 2010′s most quickly rising stars in independent music, and for good reasons. Their music is loud and driving, but reserves some of that pop sensibility. Perhaps that’s from the mixure of heavy fuzz guitars and Juno synth, or maybe it’s the upbeat rhythm and catchy melodies. However you measure it, Surfer Blood are the defining sound of today’s indie newcomers. They are a defining sound of the last days of WOXY.

May Surfer Blood’s future be as bright and rich as WOXY’s past.

Frightened Rabbit are a band with a buzz. With a new brand new album The Winter of Mixed Drinks hot off the press, we were certainly happy to have the band into our Lounge at WOXY during our SXSW sessions. The band played five amazing songs all from the new record. Here’s some video for one that’s quickly becoming a personal favorite of mine, “Swim Until You Can’t See Land.”

Sharon Jones plays a new track at WOXY

I was excited when I learned we’d be hosting a session with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at WOXY during SXSW 2010. Their tech crew showed up early to make sure everything was set to accommodate the band. So when the band showed up, they quickly hopped on stage and started jamming and warming up. At first we were told we would not be shooting video, but at the last minute we got the green light. Here’s a video of Sharon singing the hell of out a brand new tune from her forthcoming album I Learned The Hard Way called “She Ain’t a Child No More.”

The Megaphonic Thrift – SXSW 2010 at WOXY

Hailing all the way from Norway, The Megaphonic Thrift have quickly become my favorite new band.  On my first listen, I simply stated “Sonic Youth;” clearly there’s an influence there.  But with a heavy, straight-forward neo-psych sound, the band is also reminiscent The Brian Jonestown Massacre and follow Norwegians Serena-Maneesh.  We were lucky enough to have them stop by the WOXY studio for a flawless set during SXSW 2010.  Fellow fan Joe Long and I even got to name our own set!  Check out our number one request, “Talks Like a Weed Kind,” in the video we captured during their Lounge Act performance.

Vetiver in the WOXY Lounge

Vetiver in the WOXY Lounge

Recently in the WOXY Lounge, I had the chance to mix Vetiver during their tour promiting their first SubPop LP Tight Knit. Drummer Otto Hauser brought in a wonderful sounding tiny drum kit. Each drum was nested within another for easy storage like a Russian doll. Frontman Andy Cabic lead the band through a dynamic set of five songs, including two songs from Tight Knit as well as both of the songs from their Record Store Day 2009 single on SubPop (“Wishing Well” and “Pay No Mind”).
